Milnerton

Milnerton is a coastal suburb of Cape Town. The lagoon, formed where the Diep River enters the sea, with palm trees adorning the bank, is one of Milnerton's most identifiable features. Milnerton was established by a Dutch diamond prospector in 1853 who named it after his hometown in Holland.

Woodbridge Island lies south of the Milnerton Golf Club on the peninsula separating the lagoon from the ocean with 2 bridges joining Woodbridge Island to the mainland. The wooden bridge is now a national heritage site and was reopened to the public. A recently built bridge provides cars to cross to the island.

The Milnerton Lighthouse is a popular landmark found on the island, almost as popular as the beach which offers a great recreational area, especially during weekends and public holidays.

Milnerton's beach is well known for its breathtaking view of Table Mountain. It is also a popular surfing spot and the water temperature can be quite cold due to the Benguela current. The Milnerton Surf Lifesaving Club also helps to look after the beach and aims to prevent drownings. Every Wednesday during summer, surfski and stand up paddlers use the SE winds and race the Downwind Dash series to Big Bay.

Milnerton is home to two City of Cape Town-owned nature reserves. Situated inside the boundaries of the old Milnerton Racecourse are The Table Bay Nature Reserve and old Milnerton Racecourse Section.
